Trans kids are no longer safe in UK schools

Trans kids are no longer safe in English schools!

Please watch my video about my friend’s 13-year-old transgender daughter who has been forced to leave school and be home-educated, due to transphobia, DIRECTLY brought about by new anti-trans guidelines which have been imposed on all schools in England.

At the end of the last school year, one of my friends messaged me in a state of distress, as her 13-year-old transgender daughter had been told off by a sports teacher for using the girls’ changing room, even though she had used the girls changing rooms, with the head teacher’s permission, for two years since starting at that school.

My friend’s daughter, let’s call her Abbie (to protect her identity), was so distressed that she ran home in tears and didn’t want to return.

At just the age of 13, Abbie’s school career is now over.

I have known Abbie since she was 5 years old. She is not questioning her gender at all and she was diagnosed with having Gender Dysphoria, several years ago.
She has always known she is a girl and she has never wavered on that, even though she, like me, was assigned male at birth.

It is NOT a phase!

Abbie had been totally accepted by her friends and classmates as a girl and she had been thriving at her secondary school. She is conscientious, she always got her homework in on time and she had over 97% attendance. She loves gymnastics and music, playing both the piano and guitar. Abbie was a model pupil in every way.

Most of Abbie’s classmates didn’t even know that she is trans, as she came out to only a few very close friends. To them though, it’s just not relevant.
Abbie is their friend and she was very much just one of the girls.

When Abbie’s mum had a meeting with the head teacher, she was told that while the school would like to stay trans-inclusive, which they have always been, some new anti-trans guidance has been issued by the government which is forcing them to be trans-exclusionary.

They were referring to “Keeping Children Safe in Education”, otherwise known as “KCSIE 2026”, which came into force a few weeks ago, at the start of the current school year.

There are many damaging aspects to this guidance, so let’s examine them further…

Firstly, the guidance refers to trans children as “gender questioning”, however, when a trans child is ready to come out to any adult, it will be a long time after the questioning stage. Trans kids exist and Abbie is not questioning her gender at all.

Secondly, the guidance says that transphobic teachers are allowed to misgender trans pupils and they must out trans kids to their parents (if they ask for social transition at school, such as asking for a preferred name to be used), if they are not already out to them.  The problem is that many parents of trans kids are trans-hostile at first, so a supportive teacher is often the only safe adult that a trans child can tell. Until now.  Thankfully though, Abbie’s parents are super-supportive.

Also, the RSE 2026 guidance says that schools must not teach children anything that will lead them to question their gender, so many schools are now too frightened to deliver trans awareness lessons, leading trans kids to feel even more isolated than before.

Remember, no-one chooses to be trans, just as no-one chooses to not be trans, or to be gay or to be straight.  It’s just who you are.

Labour’s anti-trans guidance is a lot worse that Maggie Thatcher’s Section 28, for which the then Conservative leader, David Cameron apologised for in 2009.

Finally, this cruel guidance says that trans pupils must not use toilets and changing rooms which match their gender.
Instead, they must use facilities which match their sex assigned at birth, or use gender neutral facilities.
You may think that’s reasonable, but lets look at the inevitable consequences of bullying and poor mental health…

Abbie has always used the girls’ toilets and changing rooms, without any issues at all. In any case, girl’s loos are private as they have individual cubicles and none of the girls strip off totally in the changing rooms either.  It’s not like it was when I was a kid and we had to go through the embarrassment of stripping off naked and running through communal showers.  These days, they only strip down to a sports bra and cycling shorts.  They would wear a lot less when they are on the beach and that’s in public!

Abbie’s parents managed to persuade her to go back to school at the start of September and she reluctantly agreed to use the disabled toilet, both as a loo and also as a changing room.  After getting changed on her own, Abbie had to wait in the corridor outside the girls’ changing room, only for the teachers to usher her inside the changing room while some of the slower girls were still getting changed, so they could brief the class about their lesson. It was a total farce!

Predictably, her change of behaviour aroused suspicion among the other pupils and rumours soon started to spread that she is transgender.  This, of course, lead to name-calling and bullying.  You can only imagine the devastating effect this has had on Abbie’s mental health and it was all so unnecessary.

Abbie’s parents felt they had no alternative, but to remove their daughter from the school and to home-educate her to keep her safe – both mentally and physically.

Trans kids are no longer safe in schools in England, thanks to this trans-hostile Labour Government.

Please share this post and if you know any families with trans kids, please reach out to them to offer your support.

Trans kids deserve so much better.

CLARIFICATIONS:

I am happy to add the following clarifications to this video…

(1)  KCSIE 2026 doesn’t require schools to out every trans pupil if a pupil confides in a member of staff but doesn’t ask for any changes.  The guidance says there is no reason to break that confidence unless there is a safeguarding risk. However, when a pupil asks for social transition (e.g.asking for a preferred name to be used, or asking if they can wear a uniform normally associated with the sex they were not assigned at birth), parents are involved by default, except where that would put the child at greater risk.

(2)  My point about not encouraging pupils to question their gender comes from the RSE guidance 2026 rather than from KCSIE 2026.

(3)  The government hasn’t formally apologised for Section 28. David Cameron apologised in 2009 as Conservative leader, but that wasn’t an official government apology.

(4)  The guidance applies to schools in England rather than the whole UK.

An excellent guide for schools to the new KSIE and RSE guidance can be found here: https://www.prideineducation.co.uk/news/back-to-school-whats-new-in-the-guidance-for-september
