Sharing my story in London

Speakers at the Share a Story event in London during Inclusion Week 2019, from left: Daniel Estrada (mental health & disability advocate), Esi Hardy (disability trainer, podcast creator & founder of Celebrating Diversity), Katie Neeves (photographer, filmmaker trans ambassador & founder of Cool2BTrans), Mik Scarlet (actor, DJ and disability trainer), Sarah Burrell (event organiser & founder of Sarah Burrell Inclusion) and Michael Donaghy (trainer & ambassador at The Camden Society).

I have just returned from a speaking at superb diversity and inclusion event in London called “Share a Story” as part of Inclusion Week.  The event was organised by the lovely Sarah Burrell of Sarah Burrell Inclusion.

The idea of the event was to get a group of diverse people together and to get them to share their amazing and inspiring stories with the audience.  I was a fantastic event and I learnt so much.  I did earn a new nickname though: “Kinky Katie”!  Not what you think though…  It came from the natural kink in my hair – honest!

All the other speakers were incredible, but I was gutted that I had to follow the brilliant Mik Scarlet.  He is such a funny man as well as being a very experienced entertainer.  Our stories are so very different though and the audience responded well to mine, so I think I managed to pull it off OK.  These type of events are so important as it’s only by listening to other people’s stories that we will truly understand them.
